Book excerpts - Ch1(E3): Innovation
A simple definition to innovation to help manage innovaitons more mindfully.
Innovation is a fundamental concept in the age of accelerated change. In their simple and common form, innovations are new things that make significant differences. New technologies, methods, regulations, and designs that make things better are considered innovative. But the common definition of innovation is somewhat confusing because it doesn't explain the difference between new and innovative. In this absence of a clear demarcation between new and innovative, progressive and conservative creativities become confusing.
To manage innovation operations more effectively and efficiently and to overcome unnecessary innovation dramas, I define innovation as new things that involve elements of uncertainty and discovery. This allows us to set a simple threshold to observe how and when new things are innovative - by evaluating the degree of uncertainty and discoveries across the entire innovation operation.
